What Can You Do With a Degree in English?

Anyone who has graduated in English has heard the annoying "so what can you do with your degree?" I'm definitely one of them, and now I guess I have the answer--you can be a legal assistant and stare at the computer screen all day looking through medical records and writing proposals to judges,  of course. I'm joking, but that really is what I'm doing, and it's so weird to me. Ideally, I'll be able to find a job soon where I can be editing and working in the publication industry, but for now my job is definitely keeping me busy.

My desk was delivered yesterday and I got moved into my office! While everyone else who started on Monday is still in the call center, I already have my own desk in an office? I guess that's what a degree in English gets you! Again I'm joking and in no way do I think I'm better or more qualified than the rest of the people who started with me on Monday (there were sixteen of us in total), I just got lucky. But I have to admit, it's pretty awesome. Right now I'm sharing an office with the guy who I'm working with and in training to basically duplicate. I was under the impression that I was going to be his assistant, but it turns out he's teaching me how to do everything he does so he can have another person on his team. And so far, it's been really great. There's so much for me to learn, and looking through 400-800 pages of medical files of our clients is very daunting, but I'm slowly getting it. I wrote my first proposal yesterday and after my first attempt, it got passed up the chain to an attorney, who said it was ready to be sent in. I was really excited about that! I guess we'll really see how I really did though when the judge looks at it and decides whether to approve it or not. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.
