Summer Crafts

Since I'll have a lot more time this summer to myself, I have a couple of things in mind that I want to get done. I'm working a ton but I don't have wedding plans and homework to worry about so I want to read a lot and I also want to do some fun crafts. A bunch of friends and I are starting to have Craft Night, and so I've gotten tons of great ideas from them.

Here's one that I did the other day with Grant's help:
The original plan was to get a frame from the DI, which I did, and then to paint it and use a transparency sheet to make a calendar. I was going to put some fabric on the inside too, so when you looked at the transparency sheet you saw the fabric behind it. But I ended up getting a huge frame and I was worried I wouldn't be able to find a transparency sheet for this size. But then I was walking around walmart (I had to go and grab some door stops and copies of the office key for work) and I saw this magnetic dry erase board calendar! It was pretty cheap so I bought it and brought it home.

Grant was skeptical at first because it didn't look like it would fit inside my frame. Not to worry, I ran and grabbed our new (really nice) kitchen scissors we got as a wedding present and started to plan where I would hack away. Grant saw what I was about to do and put an end to it real quick, reminding me that I would ruin our brand new scissors by cutting through metal. (So what, I said! We'll just get a new pair! But he didn't like that response and decided he should help me before I ruin everything.)

Good thing I have him around!

He got out his razor from his toolkit and helped me draw lines where we needed to cut, and then he cut it all for me. It turned out perfect and it fits great! I then finished the job by cleaning everything and assembling it all. I think it's going to be really helpful for us to have a calendar and know each other's schedules. Plus it looks really great in our kitchen :)

Well since I didn't end up using the fabric that I had bought (I just bought an old dress from DI that I planned on cutting up for the fabric) I decided to cover a journal with it. Mother's Day was coming up and I was having the hardest time trying to think of a good gift for my mom. She's done so much for me, especially lately with all the wedding stuff. So I didn't want to just get her a card, I wanted to make her something special. This journal ended up being perfect because I know she likes to write in journals (as a kid I used to snoop around her room and read the entries she had written in her journals that she kept in her nightstand table). And she's done quite a lot of traveling lately, so I thought she could fill the journal with all her experiences. Anyways, I first covered it in brown paper, and then Grant helped me super-glue on the fabric. Then I glued on a big black button, and glued string on to the back flap so she could close the journal using the button! I think it turned out pretty good, and anyways she seems to like it!
