This past weekend Grant and I hopped on a short flight down to Texas for our reception. We left around 5 on friday and got in around 8:15. Grant's parents picked us up, and we randomly ran into my mom in an empty waiting lot! I love when coincidences like that happen, they make life so entertaining! We pulled up next to her (and I may or may not have scared her by banging on all sides of the car and completely freaking her out). We then all went over together to pick up my dad, who landed about 20 minutes after Grant and I. That night we ate dinner at Grant's house with his parents and stayed up chatting for a while. Everyone was pretty tired though and we had a long day on Saturday, so we went to bed around 12.
Saturday Grant and I were able to sleep in (which is a blessing we aren't able to enjoy much anymore) so that was really great, and much needed. Cory came over and helped out a little with the preparations before we all went to Babe's! (Me, Grant, Cory, my parents, Larry, Dan & Shannon & Gavin, and Justin met us there). I've been hearing about Babe's since about the second week Grant and I started dating. All of our friends say how amazing it is, so I had high expectations. And apart from being scared to death by fake rattle snakes (yes, really), it was really good! They have two things on the menu: Fried Chicken and Chicken Fried Steak. Then they bring the whole table this enormous plate of chicken and a bunch of sides such as mashed potatoes, creamed corn, biscuits, gravy, etc.
That picture doesn't even do it justice! The plate was huge, and there weren't that many of us! Justin won with eating 6 pieces, Cory and Grant tied second with 3 pieces and the rest of us were normal and had one, maybe two. There was about a third leftover which we got to take home. On the way out we snapped some pictures:
I think out of all of us, my dad loved it the most. I'm pretty sure if my parents had had more time, he would have made my mom stop there for another go on the way back to Connecticut.
Grant, Cory, and I drove around for a while after Babe's looking at houses (Grant trying to convince me to move to Texas). To my surprise I did find a lot of homes that I loved and I even saw some trees! One point to Texas. Wherever we end up, I want out yard and neighborhood to be full of trees. But the Texan trees will never turn the beautiful colors of New England in the Fall. One point to Connecticut.
That night was the reception! Grant and I went home and got ready. It took Grant about 10 minutes, me about an hour and 15. And I thought I made pretty good time!
The reception turned out great! It was really fun to meet all of these people that Grant had known since he was little (benefit of living in one place your whole life). They all kept saying how fantastic Grant was - and how amazing his parents were. This I know already. I'm glad I was able to meet Grant's parents so soon after we started dating. I drove back to school with my cousin Erica after Christmas (we had started dating right before Thanksgiving) and we stopped in Texas for a night and they let me stay at their house. Since then they have visited Utah several times, and we've gone up to their cabin in Idaho to be with them, and I've now been to Texas three times. So I feel as if I know them pretty well, which I'm grateful for. They really are terrific people - but that I could have guessed since Grant is so wonderful :)
The food at the reception was delicious (well the leftovers were anyways), the weather was absolutely perfect - 70ish degrees and sunny, and we had a great turnout. I loved being able to wear my wedding dress again - despite how hot it made me when I had to stand in the line. And I love seeing Grant in his suit, he looks so good! So overall I had a ton of fun, and it was a great night.
Sunday we got to sleep in again (me more than others) and then went to church with Grant's parents and family. My parents actually had to leave before that to start their long drive back to Connecticut (again, my Mom's a trooper - she's now driven from CT to UT, then UT to TX, and now TX to CT). It was really fun to sit in sacrament with all Grant's family - and their children!! Grant's cousin Marianne has the most adorable two year old girl, Breeanne. I'm pretty sure she liked me the best, since I got the most stickers out of anyone. And then when they left, she wouldn't leave until I came down and said goodbye to her. It's things like that that really make you feel good! Tate also warmed up to me a lot this trip! Tate is Carrie (Grant's oldest sister)'s oldest kid. He's 5 or 6 and sometimes he's really shy and sometimes he's not. He hasn't spoken to me much before, and this trip he kept asking for me and wanting to show off all of his stuff to me, and when his family left he ran in to say goodbye to me about 6 times! I'm beginning to feel accepted as the new Aunt Callie :)
We caught our flight around 9:15 and landed around 11:20ish. By the time we got home it was almost 1 in the morning; needless to say we didn't get much sleep last night. We both woke up so tired this morning, and Grant could barely stay awake in his classes. So we're going to be better about that! The house is still a mess though...
More about that later. I can't wait to have everything cleaned up and to upload some pictures! Hopefully we'll have some time this week to clean up. I thought we'd be able to do it this weekend, but we're actually helping my sister Andrea move in to her new apt in Logan. The moving in part won't be too fun, but I'm excited to see her nonetheless!
